Ski apartment through HomeAway made all the difference to our budget and made for a brilliant location
We had made a decision to go to the Les arcs ski area as dad Hoving and mum Hoving had worked in Les arcs in 2004. We had a look on HomeAway to try and find a great value ski apartment in a good location. There was lots of choice and in the end we went for a ski apartment in Les arcs 1600 as we knew this would work well with the funicular and the snow train.
And what a great location it was!
Out one side of the building was one ski lift. The other side of the building had a little square with 2 restaurants, a ski shop and a bakery/cafe, great sledging space with another ski lift just beyond the square which serviced the night skiing slope, fab!
Ski apartments are often compact and ours fitted that description with Mum and Dad’s bed in the lounge but but it had everything we needed and provided a fantastic base to access the mountains, come back for lunch if we want and be comfortable in the evenings.
Top Tip – self-catering ski holidays keep the budget down and the children happy as they can wear they’re onesies for dinner after a hard day skiing
Food in the fridge on arrival at our ski apartment
Homeaway holiday rentals are generally listed by owners and so the details of how the practical details will work are particular to each ski apartment. Our owner used a concierge service to provide access to keys and bedding. The concierge offered a number of services also including a food shop collection service – Amazing! I went on the Super U website and did my internet food shop – just like I do with Tesco at home except for the addition of Google Translate! – booked it for the arranged collection time and the concierge picked it up from Bourg and had it all put away in the apartment before we got there. I can’t recommend this enough, food all ready on arrival at regular pricing rather than up the mountain pricing.
Despite the low sleep levels on the snow train there was no way the boy members of the family could resist getting straight out skiing on the slopes – though they did have to wait for the lifts to open! After a morning getting aquainted with the fresh powder, they were soon hungry but the beauty of our location meant they could just pop back to the ski apartment and get stuck into the French delights from Super U.
This ease of going skiing from the apartment proved to be a really useful feature all week as family skiing inevitably involves different needs and tiredness levels. Dad Hoving would ski from the moment the ski lifts open to the last run down everyday if it was down to him – Mum Hoving does not have quite the same energies.
Make sure your Homeaway rental has a raclette grill available – easy family friendly meals that hit the spot after skiing
Overall we loved our Homeaway ski apartment for its convenience, location, views and comforts. Hopefully we can go back one day.
How we did it – the ski apartment knowhow
Booked our apartment on Homeaway.co.uk
Used the Homeaway apartment’s concierge service to collect our food shopping for a small fee.
Did our shopping online on the Super U website. You could do this and collect yourself, carrying it via the Funiculaire but you would have to make sure you don’t get too much.
